Details

This is the king of gloves and the top of the whole range available on the Mototo site. This glove's respect doesn't just come from the kangaroos and stingrays who saw their friends sacrificed in it's construction but also the hundreds of racers and road users who wear it every day and those who have taken spills and have come out with hands intact.

Every inch of this glove has been designed and engineered by the Germany based Held to be the best it can possibly be and the resounding opinion of the motorbike world is that it was a success.

What's so good about stingray leather?

Well apart from getting one back for the fans of Steve Irwin stingray leather happens to be the most abrasion resistant leather available. Perhaps as a side effect or maybe as a consequence of millions of years of evolution this makes it a perfect material for motorcycle gloves.

Its exceptional strength actually serves two purposes- It will serve you well should the worst ever happen and you find yourself sliding along the asphalt, and also its sheer abrasion resistance also means thinner panels of material can be used which keeps weight and bulkiness down and helps you feel the controls better.

The key use of the stingray leather in this glove is in the ball of the thumb. As many will remember from childhood falls, and possibly even more recently if you're unlucky, this is the area which takes the brunt of grazing in any fall. Held have used Suprotect® foam cushioning to help absorb any energy and coated this with the donated skin from our stingray friends.

Why kangaroo leather?

Kangaroo leather is cheaper than stingray leather so this is used to make up the bulk of the Titan glove in the less exposed areas. As you can see from the little table above these trusty 'roos are still considerably more hardy than those cows and there is also the added benefit that this toughness allows it to be kept very thin and so it gives you an amazing bulk-free feel of your bike's throttle and brakes almost as if you weren't wearing gloves.

The other features

All the biggest vulnerabilities in the hand are catered for here.

The little finger

The little finger has been sewn to its more trustworthy neighbour in order to reduce the chance of it catching as you fall. And Held haven't just stopped there, as on top of that both the little finger and the ring finger have been wrapped with an extra layer of Kevlar in order to make them far stronger if you take a slide.

The gauntlet

The outside of the gauntlet is another vulnerable area and this has also been well covered by Held's meticulous attention to detail. Not one, or two, but three carbon sliders coated with stingray skin have been incorporated in order to cushion the impact and avoid snagging on the road.

The knuckles

The knuckles of a glove also traditionally get the high protection treatment and Held has really gone to town here too. The main structure is formed from a type of carbon fibre which is an incredibly stiff and resistant material perfect for the impact part of any fall. This is then coated in Titanium in order to protect during any sliding. The smoothness of a metal allows easy sliding without any catching on the road surface and titanium is amongst the lightest of suitable metals so this is exactly what Held have used.

Conclusion

The Held Titan sports/race glove is often considered to be one of the best gloves available for those seeking a no-compromise approach to safety. It's not just Mototo who think this, as magazines and web forums the world over are teeming with great reviews. With meticulous attention to detail paid to every stage of construction this glove doesn't come cheap but if you're after the very best on the market with no compromise made on the safety front then this is the glove you should buy.
