How to park your motorbike in London

Thursday, 17 April 2014 11:26:00 Europe/London

If you’re a London motorcyclist like me you will know the perils and frustration of trying to park in the busy bays of central London any time after the rush-hour hordes have deposited their bikes in the few motorcycle bays available.

So what tactic do you go for in this battle for you space? Do you cram it in and create a space at the expense of your paintwork, do you wait patiently for someone to leave and hope no-one sneaks in first, or do you adopt the skills of this guy and just nail the whole parking thing with speed and style?

Check out this video and see what you think. The only problem is that you will probably have to get through a few motorbikes just practicing this technique but there’s no doubt it’s a pretty cool way to park. Clothing appears to be optional.

Friday, 11 April 2014 11:15:11 Europe/London

If you’ve recently been getting bored on your daily commute or weekend ride you’re probably in need of something to pass the time and add a little danger in to your day. A new twist which brings back the excitement and fear of riding a motorcycle that may have gone missing in recent years. Well if this sounds like you, then try riding your motorcycle backwards without a helmet on and see what happens. Just make sure that you’ve got someone filming first though as it would be a shame to not share the results with the world.

Luckily YouTube has revealed someone trying just this, so take a look and see if it’s for you. Click 'read more' for the video.

How to stop a motorbike with your crotch

Friday, 14 March 2014 17:15:00 Europe/London

I could barely watch my screen the first time I saw this yet somehow I found myself watching it again and again, though each time cringing in pain

Hopefully she got away with it in the end, I reckon the rucksack must have taken quite a lot of the abuse but still... I imagine the whole episode was more than a little bit painful.

Light up the road

Friday, 17 January 2014 13:37:07 Europe/London

Now this is a pretty interesting invention. The advert for them is great, and they tread such a fine line between kitsch and actually quite cool I just had to share them. The wheels, with more than a slight update for western tastes could actually provide a safety feature while also looking pretty awesome.

How not to ride in a city!

Friday, 22 November 2013 19:11:00 Europe/London

Being a London motorcycle rider I am constantly having to look out for all the crazy road users and sometimes it's quite a task just trying to stay alive on a bad day. Having said that, I've never been unfortunate, or stupid enough, to end up in a situation like this American rider. He's kind of only got himself to blame, but still, it requires some good skills to get to of this mess.

Yamaha release 2 new electric bike concepts

Saturday, 16 November 2013 18:46:00 Europe/London

A few days before the start of the Tokyo Motor Show, Yamaha rolled out a number of two-wheeled concepts of both the electric- and gasoline-powered kind. First, the PES1 is a 90kg road bike that sports a mid-mounted battery pack, brushless DC motor and is sure to weigh in at less than a number of its riders. It also has the ability to go from fully automatic to manual transmission with the flip of a toggle switch which is pretty cool.

This is a concept, of course, so there's no indication of range or how much the slim down will impact those Sunday rides. The outfit also unveiled the PED1: the off-road sibling of the PES1 with similar internals. So similar in fact that Yahama says that you'll be able to swap batteries between the two should you opt for both the on-road and dirt-bound versions (if and when they are ever available).

Naturally, there's no word on pricing just yet, but you can rest assured that we're keeping an eye out for more on this trio. For a look at the PED1 and PES1 check the full story link below:

Check out this bike made out of Gold!

Friday, 27 September 2013 13:54:31 Europe/London

After a bit of a break for the summer I thought I would share this little story about a motorbike made of ouf 24 carat gold I found on VisorDown. Click the 'read more' link below for a picture

Even if you won the EuroMillions jackpot, your accountant would wince at the thought of you spending £550,000 on a motorcycle, which goes to show just how unbelievably minted some people on this planet really are.

This Lauge Jensen is wrapped in 24-carat gold Lauge Jensen also features a few diamonds. Well, hundreds of them, actually. It has been designed more as a show piece, than a bike to be ridden. Although you can ride it, you'd just have to change the exhausts for standard ones, unless you liquid gold dripping onto the road.

Let's face it, if you can afford half-a-million quid on a motorcycle, losing a few thousand pounds' worth of gold isn't going to bother you..

Talking tail lights to help motorcycle safety

Friday, 19 July 2013 10:41:54 Europe/London

It's always nice to see an innovative way of making motorbike safer so the news that intelligent tail lights could enable communication between vehicles in order to reduce accidents is always good to hear. At least that's the idea behind a collaborative Connected Vehicle Safety project between Intel and National Taiwan University. Its purpose is so that you'll be able to know just what the vehicles around you are up to -- whether they're speeding or braking or making a left -- by receiving data from their tail lights. Your vehicle could then stop or accelerate automatically without you needing to intervene, or you could choose to react manually if desired.

Mission R electric motorcycle launched by Mission Motorcycles

Wednesday, 5 June 2013 20:56:23 Europe/London

Looks like the American motorcycle company Mission Motorcycles has broken from the traditional American model of producing cruisers and bikes for fat people and actually produced something pretty amazing.

To make things even better, this new bike is electric, providing you with guilt free pleasure with very few moving parts to break down on you. A few versions have been produced, the model R will cost $20k which nets a 163HP motor, a 105-mile battery and an information system with a camera, HUD and sat nav built in and the limited edition RS brings lighter carbon fiber wheels, Öhlins FGRT forks and an actually quite useful 140-mile battery. You will have to be quick getting your $57k in for the RS though as only 40 are being made.

But the best thing about these bikes has nothing to do with the specs above, it's how they look. Click below for images of pure bike perfection.

Crazy Chinese Scooter Man

Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:29:28 Europe/London

Not much in the way of real news this week, no Crutchlow dominated MotoGP and no new products or press releases. But.... on the plus side we have an amazing video of a maniac chinese bloke trying to ride his scooter around town which is well worth a few minutes of your time.

It's strange how little everyone seems to care about being crashed in to by a man on a bike. One guy even helps him get up and put on his helmet. Don't think I would be that kind if someone rode in to the side of me.

New MotoGP season brings back the old rivalry

Interesting uses for a motorcycle

Friday, 15 February 2013 09:50:53 Europe/London

I would love to see the log-carrying bike going down the road, I still can't believe that it can make it round a corner.

Oh là là - The French get angry

Friday, 8 February 2013 15:13:50 Europe/London

Sacrebleu! It turns out that protests do sometimes work. At least they do for the French anyway, having refined the art of striking and protesting to levels us Brits could never manage

It seems the the French authorities have waved their well-used white flag again and announced permanent scrapping of plans to force all bikers riding a machine larger than 125cc to wear reflective clothing. Under the proposals, bikers not wearing the appropriate reflective clothing would have been liable to a 68 Euros fine and two points on their licence.

The news comes after a series of (often semi-naked) demonstrations organised by the French Federation of Angry Bikers which claims that up to 100,000 riders were involved in national demonstrations. With this battle won, the Angry Bikers are now seeking to make traffic filtering legal in France.

Great news for us lot anyway as hopefully this will stop any equivalent ideas crossing the channel. Though having said that, voluntarily wearing bright clothing in bad and dingy weather is a superb idea and there's no better product to meet your needs than our Verso Vest.

Doping in motorcycle racing

Friday, 1 February 2013 12:19:55 Europe/London

Every so often sports news, which is traditionally placed on the back pages of newspapers, makes its way onto the front pages. One such recent occurrence has been the doping scandal that has embroiled world renowned cyclist Lance Armstrong along with his subsequent confession to perpetual cheating through the most successful years of his career.

This made me think whether doping could happen in motorcycle racing and whether there was any drug testing within major motorcycle events such as MotoGP or the Dakar Rally?

Better use for a FZR600?

Friday, 23 November 2012 10:33:33 Europe/London

Do you ride an FZR600? Do you find that it just isn't dangerous enough for your thrill-seeking adrenaline pumped lifestyle? If so then you must be the crazy nutter who came up with this alternative use for the venerable 99bhp engine and turned it in to a helicopter.

In some ways this is actually a pretty neat solution for getting some more top-end speed out of your FZR600. Those things used to claim about 140mph which although not bad, is not a touch on the speed this thing will hit as it plummets out of the sky. Luckily it's not quite as dangerous as it looks however as it's been fitted with seat belts for that extra layer of safety should the worst happen

According to Visordown.com it has just been sold on eBay for £4,750 so if you fancy your chances of defying gravity on a budget you're now going to have to build your own one. Click the link below for some pictures of this ingeniously crazy idea.

Keanu Reeves starts motorcycle company

Friday, 19 October 2012 14:26:00 Europe/London

The time bending star better known as Ted Theodore Logan Esq. has recently announced he will be starting up his own motorcycle company. 'I'm a guy that loves everything about motorcycles - the sounds, the style and the aesthetic combined with the function but most of all the riding experience. I've enjoyed motorcycles for as long as I can remember and I'm ready to share my passion with the world.' Are the reassuringly pretentious words that came out of him.

He's teamed up with a bloke from LA County Choprods, a custom bike manufacturer similar to the pretty entertaining Orange County Choppers programme in order to create a slightly bizarre hybrid of sports bikes and all-American full-fat cruiser under the name of Arch Motorcycle Company. Though judging by the picture below I wonder if the cornering of these things is going to be good enough to work well enough to see any appear over here in Europe?

New bike route app

Friday, 5 October 2012 13:46:13 Europe/London

Afternoon all. I have just come across a pretty interesting app which seems like it has some potential. It promises to do a number of things but by far the best part for me was the facility to share and rate local motorbike routes and display them as routes on google maps. As a London based biker with limited experience of my nearest routes in the countryside this sounds ideal to me and I can't wait to use it. It also has an overlay of accident hotspots which is pretty cool.

It has a number of other features too but it's parking bay finder is notably short of data which is a shame but for a system which relies on other people's data I guess it may improve in the future.

It's available for iPhone and Android devices so check it out and add your best routes, especially if they're over in Essex and Suffolk! www.ibikerapp.com is their website for more info.

Pedrosa for the championship anyone?

Friday, 24 August 2012 22:12:03 Europe/London

So, last weekend proved to be an eventful one in the world of MotoGP as always as Casey Stoner crashed out in practice breaking his right ankle in the process. Thanks to a combination of sheer guts and modern medicine Stoner managed to compete in the race at Indianapolis and finish in the points with a highly creditable 4th place which is actually incredible given the circumstances. When the dust settled after the weekend Stoner learnt the true extent of his injuries and has conceded that he will miss this weekend’s race in the Czech Republic and that the subsequent loss of points effectively puts him out of the championship.
